A few Kenyans have risen from grass to grace. One of them is Anthony Kibagendi, a Kisii politician eyeing the Kitutu Chache parliamentary seat.
The entrepreneur who doubles up as a politician is the founder of Texas Rangers Security Company and Westwood Security Services Ltd according to his LinkedIn profile.
Anthony Kibagendi's early life Kibagendi was born on July 4, 1982. He is 39 years old.
The businessman was raised by a single mother alongside his two siblings in their rural home in Kisii county.
He started his education journey at St Mary’s Primary School before proceeding to Maseno School, where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Kibagendi's first business
Having come from a humble background with low income, Kibagendi ventured into business at an early stage to make ends meet.
While studying at St Mary’s Primary School, he bought and sold sweets for profit.
He purchased a packet of sweets with 120 pieces at KSh 50 and sold each at KSh 1, making more than 100% profit.
He saved the money, and when he joined Maseno School, he would buy clothes and shoes in Kisumu to sell during the holidays, Who Owns Kenya reported. After completing his secondary education, he established another business - selling phone cases and chargers.
He was then temporarily employed as a clerk at a local bank but continued doing business.
Kibagendi's breakthrough
His big breakthrough came when he supplied over 1000 engraved wooden key holders to a bookshop.
He made triple profits from a consignment of KSh 3,000 (KSh 10,000). Kibagendi joined Maseno University, where his entrepreneurial spirit went on.
As other students wasted their Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) cash, he used it to expand his businesses.
"An idea came to me about making branded university T-shirts. I was lucky to get orders from all the public universities and the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) in Kisumu,” he recalled.
He acquired shares at Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).
In 2006, he sold the shares and invested KSh 1 million in a chemist in Nairobi. However, the business collapsed two years after its establishment as he was unable to meet the high demands including renting a pharmaceutical certificate.
Car hire business
Kibagendi ventured into the murky field of politics in 2007 and using his connections, he leased and hired out cars.
His fleet grew enabling him to open n auto care centre in Embakasi.
The company mostly hires four-wheeler vehicles corporates and high profile individuals.
Security business
The former secretary of youth affairs, at the Office Of the Deputy President, also invited over KSh 30 million in the security business through Texas Rangers Security Company and Westwood Security Services LTD.
He has employed over 75 guards stationed at different premises across the country.
Some of the services offered by the company as per his LinkedIn profile are commercial security, CCTV video surveillance, special event security, warehouse security and VIP security escorts among others.
He is also a director at Guaranti Group, which provides mortgage and financial needs solutions.
