Super Metro: Blunder That Caused Nairobi Expressway Accident
Road safety
- The management of Super Metro has attributed the Wednesday, July 6, accident at the entrance of the Nairobi Expressway in Westlands to a speeding personal vehicle that tried to join the elevated road from the opposite direction.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 7, the management claimed that the personal car forced the Super Metro bus to swerve to avoid the collision.
The management dispelled media reports that the Super Metro bus was speeding at the time of the accident.
A Super Metro bus was involved in an accident at the Expressway entrance along Waiyaki Way on Wednesday, July 6, 2022."Yesterday's accident was caused by a personal car which was speeding from Brookside Drive, Nairobi as it tried to join the Expressway from the opposite direction," the management stated.
Super Metro affirmed that the police alongside the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) had reviewed the expressway CCTV footage in order to corroborate its statement."Nothing is of greater importance that the conservation of human life. Kindly as we all use our roads, always put in mind that caution is the parent of safety. The key to safety is in your hands."
"To the victims, you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God grant you a speedy recovery. Life is not a car part," read part of the statement.
The accident occurred in Westlands near Lion place and saw the bus block the entrance to the toll station.
This was the second accident in a week involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) crashing into a toll station.
On Monday night, July 4, an Embassava Sacco was captured ramming into a white SUV that was exiting the Mlolongo toll station.
This bus crashed into the toll station before overturning while the white SUV hit a culvert beside the toll station and eventually rolled.
The numerous accidents led to Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, banning matatus and all PSVs from accessing the Expressway. Further, traffic police officers were introduced at various points of the Expressway to enforce the rules.
The directive was, however, issued on a temporal basis until proper measures are effected.
"The Ministry of Transport has, therefore, taken the decision to temporarily restrict commercial passenger vehicles with a capacity of more than seven (7) passengers from using the Nairobi Expressway, as we investigate the cause of these accidents and develop appropriate safety measures," read the statement in part.
