Laureus has Unveiled the Contenders for the Prestigious 2024 Sportswoman of the Year accolade, and Faith Kipyegon
Laureus has unveiled the contenders for the prestigious 2024 Sportswoman of the Year accolade, and Faith Kipyegon graces the illustrious lineup alongside Aitana Bonmati (Spain), Shericka Jackson (Jamaica), Sha’Carri Richardson (USA), Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), and Iga Swiatek (Poland).
A triumph for Kipyegon would mark her as the second Kenyan female to clinch the award following in the footsteps of Vivian Cheruiyot (2012). Additionally, Kipyegon aims to etch her name in history as the second 1500m runner to secure this honor after British athlete Kelly Holmes.
The previous two editions of the award have been claimed by Jamaican sprinters, prompting Kipyegon to strive to thwart the possibility of a Jamaican three-peat.
Faith Kipyegon will be pitted against sportswomen who enjoyed a stellar 2023. While acknowledging the remarkable achievements of her fellow nominees, it is undeniable that none have come close to matching the accomplishments that Kipyegon has amassed.
Here are the reasons why I believe Ms. Kipyegon is deserving of the award based on her remarkable 2023 achievements:
1. Faith Kipyegon emerged victorious in four Diamond League races.
2. Faith Kipyegon shattered the world records in the 1500m and 5000m events.
3. Faith Kipyegon secured gold in both the 1500m and 5000m races.
4. Faith Kipyegon claimed the title of double world champion.
5. Faith Kipyegon set two world records within a fortnight.
6. Faith Kipyegon became only the second woman in athletics history to hold records in both the 1500m and 5000m events.
7. Faith Kipyegon also established a new mile world record.
8. Faith Kipyegon became the first woman to break world records in three different disciplines within six months: Mile, 1500m, and 5000m.
9. Faith Kipyegon showcased her culinary skills by treating her competitors to delectable dishes such as chicken wings in Doha, Macaroni and Cheese in Eugene, chilled Mursik in Paris, and Ndûma ya múirítu and strungi in Monaco while breaking the mile record.
10. Apart from her athletic prowess, Faith Kipyegon exuded the most infectious smile among the nominees in 2023.
11. In the realm of athletics, it is a rarity, but nearly every athlete who faced Kipyegon in 2023 achieved a personal best, a testament to her ability to elevate the performance of others.
Moreover, the awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Madrid in April. As the sun rises and sets, I fervently hope that Faith Kipyegon will not be unjustly deprived of this accolade to appease Spain and their contender, Aitana Bonmati.
All the best Faith.
