Senator Cherargei: The Status of the Suga Bill (National Assembly Bill No. 33 of 2022)

Senator Wakili Cherargei, representing Nandi County, recently conducted a consultative meeting with sugarcane farmers from Aldai and Tinderet constituencies to discuss the status of the SUGAR BILL (National Assembly Bill No. 33 of 2022). The meeting, which took place at Maraba Primary School in Nandi County, was aimed at addressing the concerns and needs of the sugarcane farmers in the region.

During the meeting, the sugarcane farmers made several resolutions. Firstly, they emphasized the importance of remaining in the central region of Southern Nandi subcounties, as well as in Kisumu and Kericho, due to their proximity to most sugar factories. This proximity would facilitate easy cane delivery and benefit the farmers in terms of transportation costs and efficiency.

Secondly, the farmers highlighted the need for farmers' representatives to be included in the Sugar Pricing Committee, alongside other stakeholders. This would ensure that the interests of the farmers are adequately represented and considered in the decision-making process regarding sugar pricing.

Furthermore, the sugarcane farmers requested that the region be allocated two directors on the Kenya Sugar Board to address their diverse needs effectively. This would enable the farmers to have a voice in the decision-making processes of the board and ensure that their concerns are taken into account.

Additionally, the farmers raised concerns about the deplorable state of the roads network in the region and proposed that the cess money be ring-fenced for roads maintenance in the region. This would help improve the infrastructure and facilitate the transportation of sugarcane to the factories.

Senator Wakili Cherargei assured the sugarcane farmers that he would advocate for their proposals during the committee amendments stage in the Senate. He pledged to ensure that their concerns are captured in the law and that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes related to the sugar industry.

Overall, the consultative meeting was a productive and collaborative effort to address the challenges faced by sugarcane farmers in Nandi County. Senator Wakili Cherargei's commitment to advocating for the farmers' needs and concerns demonstrates his dedication to serving the interests of his constituents.
